Report: Monty Williams to join coaching staff as lead assistant

By Brandon Apter, Sports Talk Philly editor

The Bryan Colangelo saga is still at the forefront of Philadelphia 76ers fans and reporters, but that didn't stop Brett Brown from adding to his coaching staff. After losing Lloyd Pierce to a head coaching job in Atlanta, Brett Brown will be joined by Monty Williams on his coaching staff.

Williams has been coaching around the NBA since 2005 in various roles. He served as head coach for New Orleans from 2010-2015, compiling a 173-221 record over five seasons, with the last year ending in a loss to the Golden State Warriors in the first-round of the playoffs. Williams joined the Thunder in 2015 as an associate head coach before heading to San Antonio in 2016 as the Vice President of Basketball Operations.

The Spurs connection is there with Brett Brown and Monty Williams, with both guys having coached under or played for Gregg Popovich.

Williams was the recipient of the first ever Sager Strong Award at the inaugural NBA Awards in 2017.
