Royals ‘Peeking In’ on Phillies Prospects As Clubs Discuss Moustakas Trade

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

While the Philadelphia Phillies have pondered acquiring soon-to-be free agent star Manny Machado, or future Hall of Famer Adrian Beltre to improve their offense, the club also has their sights set on former second overall draft pick, Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas.

According to NBC Sports Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury, both the Phillies and Royals officials "have had discussions" involving the 2015 World Series champion. In addition, per Salisbury, Royals scouts have been "peeking in" on Phillies minor-league prospects.

Salisbury writes:

"Moustakas, who turns 30 in September, is a two-time All-Star and left-handed-hitting power bat who stroked 38 homers and drove in 85 runs in 2017. He had hoped to ride that season to a big, free-agent payday last winter, but one never materialized and he returned to the Royals for one year and $6.5 million."

In 78 games this season, Moustakas is slashing .255/.310/.467 with 17 doubles, one triple, 15 home runs and 49 RBI. During the 2015 World Series, the Los Angeles, California, native hit .304/.333/.304 with seven hits and three RBI for the Royals, opposite the Phillies' division rival New York Mets.
