Phillies’ Eflin seeks 6th straight win opposite Machado, MLB-worst Orioles

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

For the first time in three years, the Philadelphia Phillies (45-37) will take on the MLB-worst Baltimore Orioles (24-59) at home. Right-handers Zach Eflin and Alex Cobb will square off in the first of a two-game set Tuesday evening at Citizens Bank Park. Eflin has won five straight starts, combining for a 1.76 ERA and 0.978 WHIP. Phillies trade candidate Manny Machado, meanwhile, will bat third for the Orioles as the starting shortstop.

The Phillies secured the series victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday, edging their division rivals 4-3 in 13 innings. After falling behind 3-0, the Phillies rallied with three runs in the fifth. The game would remain notched at three until the bottom of the 13th, when catcher Andrew Knapp hit the Phillies' first walkoff home run since Ryan Howard in April 2016. Right-handed starter Nick Pivetta pitched an inning in relief and picked up his fifth win of the season.

The Phillies are 5-4 against American League opponents this season, and are 6-6 overall in games played on Tuesdays.
