Embiid’s Rise from Cameroon to NBA Featured On Vice

By Brandon Apter, Sports Talk Philly Staff

If you are a Sixers fan, you probably know Joel Embiid's story by now. He started playing basketball the age of 15 and now, just nine years later, he's an All-Star NBA player.

Embiid attended a camp run by former Sixers forward Luc Mbah a Moute having not really played any basketball whatsoever. At the age of 16, though, with Mbah a Moute as his mentor, he moved moved to the states with the hopes of becoming a professional basketball player.

Although injuries derailed the first 2.5 seasons of his career, Embiid is one of the most recognized players in the NBA and the Sixers are one of the league's premier young squads heading into the 2018-19 season.

At the end of September, Vice Sports released a feature on Embiid and Mbah a Moute and their journey for Cameroon to the NBA. The video includes footage from Embiid just starting to play basketball, how his parents felt about him pursuing basketball over volleyball, the emotions of losing a brother and much more.
