Hoskins on Machado, Harper: Always ‘Right Time’ to Add ‘Generational Player’

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

Philadelphia Phillies 1B/LF Rhys Hoskins may be halfway across the globe at the All-Star Series in Japan, yet he cannot escape the heat of the MLB Offseason Hot Stove.

With the Phillies considered among the favorites to sign both Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, one reporter covering the seven-game exhibition series got the rare opportunity this weekend to ask Hoskins — post-World Series, and amid the offseason — on his thoughts of the potential signings.

Hoskins said he "of course" would welcome adding Machado and/or Harper to the team, and that he hopes the club improves this offseason.

"We would like to add an All-Star caliber player," Hoskins said. "I think there's always a right time to add a generational player."

When asked if he had any worries of Machado's potential "baggage" — alluding to his controversial postseason comments and actions with the Los Angeles Dodgers — Hoskins responded, "No."

Machado and Harper are poised to receive the largest contracts in Major League Baseball history. Such contracts are only awarded to such "generational players," who could significantly improve the club for not only the 2019 season, but way beyond.
