Report: Cavs 'dangled' Korver, protected pick for Fultz

By Brandon Apter, Sports Talk Philly Staff

Sixers guard Markelle Fultz is in New York getting a series of consultations done on his right shoulder. After beginning the season in the starting lineup, Fultz was moved to the bench upon the acquisition of Jimmy Butler. It was only a short while after that when Fultz's agent recommended that Markelle go to have his shoulder examined.

Since Fultz has been sidelined, there have been reports of the Sixers shopping the second-year guard wile Markelle's representatives have denied any request for trade. A change of scenery at this point might be the best course of action for both sides and it turns out that the Sixers reportedly got an offer from Cleveland for the former top pick, according to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders.

Other teams have been sniffing around the Fultz situation, with the Cleveland Cavaliers believed to have dangled a deal built around Kyle Korver and a protected draft pick.

The Cavaliers reportedly inquired about Fultz over the weekend.

Korver, 37, is signed through this season and has a partial guarantee of $3.4 million for the 2019-20 campaign. While the salaries of Korver and Fultz match, Kyle's defense may be more of a liability than people realize. He is shooting over 46 percent from beyond the arc this season, but he is posting a career-worst defensive rating of 118 and his -3.1 defensive box plus/minus is also a career-worst.

As for the protected pick, I'd imagine it would be a protection similar to the Nerlens Noel deal where the pick, if it didn't convey, turned into two future second-rounders.

Kyler goes on to say that no one 'currently calling the shots' in Philadelphia feels any loyalty to Fultz and sources that have inquired about him don't believe he'll be with the Sixers past the trade deadline.

Despite the recent developments in the Markelle Fultz saga, teammate Jimmy Butler offered his support after Tuesday's practice.

"I just want Markelle to know that he's got everyone in his corner here," Butler said. "We want him to be great, we want him to continue to work. All the outside noise is just what it is...it's noise from the outside. I love having him around, everybody here loves having him around."

Fultz continues to visit with specialists for his shoulder in New York. An update on his status is expected later in the week.
