Flyers Officially Eliminated with Loss to Hurricanes

By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor

The Flyers playoff push is officially over after a 5-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon.

The Flyers had to weather the storm early as Cam Talbot was peppered with shots early, several from point-blank range off of Flyers turnovers.

Midway through the first, the Flyers struck for the first goal off an odd-man rush. A nice play by James van Riemsdyk at the Flyers blue line sent Corban Knight the other way with Claude Giroux on a two-on-one. Knight centered to Giroux for the one-timer, beating Petr Mrazek for his first goal in 11 games.

Carolina quickly got the goal back on a power play. A loose puck sat in front of the net as Ivan Provorov was unable to sweep it away. Teuvo Teravainen was the first to find it and lifted a shot over Talbot to tie the game at one.

Just 21 seconds later, another defensive breakdown and bad rebound gave Carolina another goal. Dougie Hamilton was able to pick up the rebound as the Flyers were caught flat-footed again and scored to make it 2-1.

After 20 minutes, Carolina had a 13-8 lead in shots.

Both teams had a few looks in the second period, but no scoring. The Flyers failed to capitalize on a late power play.

After 40 minutes, Carolina had a 23-15 lead in shots.

Midway through the third, Carolina padded the lead with a power-play goal by Justin Faulk.

The Flyers got the lead back to within one with a power-play goal by Oskar Lindblom, but Carolina iced the game with a pair of empty net goals by Jaccob Slavin and Brock McGinn.

Mrazek made 30 saves in the win. Talbot made 27 saves in the loss.

The Flyers have four games remaining on the season. They play again on Sunday afternoon at home against the New York Rangers at 12:30 p.m.
