The Philadelphia 76ers will be conducting a free-agent minicamp on Thursday afternoon, according to multiple sources.
The 76ers are holding this minicamp with the goal of finding players who can fill out the bottom of the roster. Joe Johnson and former Iona standout A.J. English are headlining the reported group of players participating in the minicamp.
Ex-NBA guard Joe Johnson is in Philadelphia and is working out for the Sixers tomorrow, a source told @espn @TheUndefeated. The MVP of @thebig3 also is expected to work out for the Clippers, Bucks & Nuggets. Joe Johnson & the Triplets are playing in the Big 3 title game Sunday.— Marc J. English is a player who has shown glimpses of being able to put the ball in the net at a high clip while in college at Iona College. He has totaled over 2,000 points in his collegiate career, but he went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft. He has since been playing in Europe, most recently for Lavrio in Greece last season.
Philadelphia is already near the 2o-man roster limit for NBA teams in the offseason. However, Johnson would be a solid addition due to his ability to create with the ball in his hands. Right now, the Sixers have a clear deficit in scoring and creativity coming from their crop of wing players off the bench. The team's wing players off the bench includes James Ennis III, Furkan Korkmaz, Zhaire Smith and rookie Matisse Thybulle.
It doesn't look like there is a good chance that English makes the team, considering that they are near the 20-man roster limit and that he seems to be more of a project-type player.
There is no guarantee that the 76ers add any players that participate in tomorrow's minicamp. However, if they attempt to add Johnson to the roster, they will have to compete with the other teams that are reportedly also interested in his services (Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets).
UPDATE: ESPN Senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that former 76er Spencer Hawes will be a part of Thursday's minicamp. Hawes, a 10-year veteran, played for the Lakers G-League team last season.
