Mets Let Ruben Amaro Jr. Go from Front Office Role

In his life after the Phillies, former Phillies outfielder, assistant general manager, and general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. has had a number of roles.  Amaro's first job was to be Boston Red Sox first base coach.  Amaro then took the same role with the New York Mets, before moving into the front office this offseason as a special assistant to general manager Brodie Van Wagenen.

However, that role is coming to an end. According to Matt Ehalt of Yahoo Sports, Amaro has been let go as part of a shakeup in the Mets front office:

While the role did not work out, it was a worthwhile gamble for Amaro.

The Mets made the unconventional move of hiring Van Wagenen to be the general manager.  Once representing many of the Mets star players such as Jacob deGrom, Yoenis Cespedes and minor league outfielder Tim Tebow, Van Wagenen jumped from the CAA Agency right not the front office, without any experience.  The Mets moved Amaro into an assistant role, presumably to help.

For Amaro, the move made sense if he was looking to serve as a general manager again.  The unconventional hire might not have worked out and Amaro would have been in a prime spot to jump into at least an interim role. Van Wagenen's tenure with the Mets has been controversial at times and may not ultimately be a successful one.

The future for Amaro will be interesting to follow.  Will he return to coaching? Will he join a front office?  At just 54 years old, Amaro has many experiences under his belt from which to draw.
