The Philadelphia Eagles have resigned quarterback Ian Book and placed him on the practice squad ahead of Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. Book previously spent parts of the 2022-23 NFL season with the Eagles before being waived in August 2023 as part of final cuts.

The addition of Book to the practice squad is ominous.

As of Thursday morning, the Eagles have not announced who will start at quarterback for regular seasons’ penultimate game against the hated Cowboys. Starting quarterback Jalen Hurts is still in NFL mandated concussion protocol after suffering the injury due to a dirty hit in the last game against Washington. Hurts was listed as “did not participate/DNP” in Thursday’s practice report. Backup quarterback Kenny Pickett is dealing with injured ribs and was listed as “limited participant/LP” in the same practice report. As of now, emergency quarterback Tanner McKee is the only healthy quarterback on the active roster.

Good times!

The Notre Dame product has some familiarity with the Birds’ offensive system albeit under a different offensive coordinator. Reading through the tea leaves, Book could possibly be serving as the backup to McKee since NFL rules forbid a practice squad quarterback from serving as the emergency/third quarterback on game day.
