Sixers “in talks” with Mike D’Antoni to become associate head coach

The Philadelphia 76ers are "in talks" with Mike D'Antoni to join Brett Brown's staff as their associate head coach, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

D'Antoni could join the Sixers' bench "later this month," according to Wojnarowski, as he has been in discussion with both Brown and new team chairman of basketball operations, Jerry Colangelo.

The Yahoo Sports report came just hours after it was announced Brown and the Sixers agreed to a two-year extension that would last through the 2018-19 season.

D'Antoni, 64, and Colangelo have a longstanding relationship that includes successful runs together with the Phoenix Suns and USA Basketball. D'Antoni has been the revolutionary offensive mind of the modern NBA era, clearing the path for faster, smaller offenses that thrive on the 3-point shot.

D'Antoni last manned the NBA bench as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers from 2012-14, where he finished 67-87 (.435) over 154 games. He was the assistant head coach of the Denver Nuggets and the Phoenix Suns during the 1997-98 and 2002-03 seasons, respectively.
