Phillies, Nationals square-off in twin bill doubleheader

For the price of one admission, fans can watch at least 18 innings of baseball today at Citizens Bank Park, as the Philadelphia Phillies (26-49) face the division-leading Washington Nationals (41-33) in National League baseball.

Because of Saturday's 3:05 pm game being cancelled due to rain, newly-named interim manager Pete Mackanin was not able to even his career managerial record. In Mackanin's debut under his new title in red pinstripes Friday evening, the Phillies fell 5-2 to Max Scherzer and the Nationals. Mackanin replaces Ryne Sandberg, who resigned Friday after going (119-159) in 278 total games managed.

Mackanin previously served as interim manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates for 26 games in 2005 (12-14), and the Cincinnati Reds for 80 games in 2007 (41-39).

Kevin Correia, 34, and Stephen Strasburg, 26, will start for the Phillies and Nationals respectively in the first game of the doubleheader, which is set to begin at 1:05 pm.

Right handed rookie Severino Gonzalez will start the second game of the twin bill for the Phillies. He was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley today, as Major League Baseball allows teams to add a 26th player to their active roster to play in the second game of a doubleheader.

Taylor Jordan (0-2, 8.44 ERA) is reportedly the Nationals' addition to their roster for Game 2, according to Mark Zuckerman of CSNWashington.com, as he was scratched from a start last night with the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs.

 Game Notes:

  • In 13 career starts against the Phillies, Stephen Strasburg is (5-2) with a 2.48 ERA. He has 92 strikeouts in 80.0 innings, while allowing 63 hits, 29 runs (22 earned), seven home runs and 12 walks.
  • Outfielder Ben Revere hit his first career pinch-hit home run Friday evening against Scherzer. Over his past five games, he is batting .550/.571/.750 with seven runs scored in 21 plate appearances, and three runs-batted-in.
  • The Phillies are 60-36 all-time, and 6-4 in their last ten meetings, against the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park.
