Phillies pitcher Sean O’Sullivan breaks Reds outfielder Marlon Byrd’s wrist with pitch

According to the early returns, the Phillies greatly prevailed over the Cincinnati Reds in the trade that sent outfielder Marlon Byrd to the Reds for prospect Ben Lively.   Lively has greatly impressed scouts.  Byrd, on the other hand, has struggled to hit just over .200 most of the season (though he does have 10 home runs).  Now, Byrd may miss significant time thanks to the Phillies.

C. Trent Rosecranz of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports:

Byrd's fractured wrist occurred in the sixth inning from a Sean O'Sullivan pitch.

Now, this injury could have lasting effects for the Reds.  Byrd's deal – like many other Phillies contracts – includes a vesting option for 2015.  Byrd needs to reach 550 plate appearances to guarantee the $8 million option for 2016.  Byrd could miss that with a disabled list stint.

While Byrd has not been placed on the disabled list yet, the fracture is a very good bet to lead to that.  Like Rosecrans said, we will know more tomorrow.
