Phillies Agree With The Other Roberto Hernandez

Well, we had a few minutes of excitement in Phillies land.  Then it turned out the Phillies' free agent acquisition was not Matt Garza.  It was not Ervin Santana.  It wasn't even a broken-down Johan Santana.   The Phillies have signed Roberto Hernandez, according to many reports.

Hernandez is best-known for going by "Fausto Carmona", a fake name he used while pretending he was much younger than he was.  Hernandez was arrested in January, 2012 for using a false identity to obtain a U.S. Visa.   At that point it was revealed that his name was actually Roberto Hernandez and that he was 31, not 28.   Hernandez turned 33 five days ago.

As for how he can pitch, Hernandez did not have a good year once he had his real name.   In 2013 for the Tampa Bay Rays, Hernandez went 6-13 with a 4.33 ERA.   He made 24 starts, but pitched eight games out of the bullpen as well.  Hernandez lost his starting role heading into the month of September for the Rays.

Hernandez is no relation to Roberto Hernandez who pitched for the Phillies in 2004.
