John Lannan pitched eight shutout innings on Monday night. This morning, it you looked at the ERA of the five starters that currently make up the Phillies' rotation, you'd find a shocking revelation. The pitcher with the worst ERA is Cole Hamels.
That's the arm the Phillies (44-46) will turn to on Tuesday night as they try to take a hold of the series against the Nationals (46-43).
Hamels (3-11, 4.38 ERA) gets the start for the Phillies. Hamels won just his third game of the season on July 4, beating the Pirates allowing two runs – one earned – on five hits in seven innings. He faced the Nationals on May 26, taking the loss after allowing five runs – three earned – on six hits in 6 1/3 innings. In his career against the Nationals, Hamels is 13-6 with a 2.64 ERA. At Citizens Bank Park, he is 49-38 with a 3.35 ERA.
The Phillies will face right-hander Taylor Jordan (0-1, 2.70 ERA). Jordan allowed two runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings in his last start, taking a no-decision against the Brewers. Jordan is making his third major-league start and first against the Phillies and at Citizens Bank Park.
