Polanco’s Power Helps Phillies Avoid a Sweep

Phillies did not win the series, but they did end the home stand on a high note. Narveson didn't allow a hit through the first 5 2/3 innings, while, Cliff Lee, allowed three runs – two earned – and eight hits in six innings.

In the first and third innings against Cliff Lee, the Brewers first baseman Princess Fielder delivered RBIs to take 2-0 lead. Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy added the lead with a solo homerun (his first of the season) to make it 3-0.  

Shane Victorino walked in fourth inning to end Narveson’s perfect game bid, while, John Mayberry Jr.’s double in the fifth broke up the no-hitter. 

In the sixth inning, the Phillies finally got something started when Wilson Valdez got on base via a walk, then Shane Victorino singled… but then Placido Polanco launched a three-run shot (his second of the year) into the seats after falling behind 0-2 in the count. It’s a tied game! Shane Victorino hit a go-ahead tiebreaking homerun in the eighth inning. The Phillies took the lead, 4-3. 

Kyle Kendrick pitched a scoreless inning without a meltdown. Ryan Madson also (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn the win, and Jose Contreras finished for his fourth save in four tries.

The Phillies (11-6, 1st East) will now head to the west coast for a four-game series with the Padres (7-9, 5th NL West). Roy Oswalt is set to take the mound after taking a no-decision against the Marlins and left the game early because of back spasms, while the Padres will send Mat Latos. 

Fun Fact:  Brewers Centerfielder Carlos Gomez took away at least nine extra base hits from the Phillies in this series.
