Report: 76ers Bring Back Kyle Lowry on 1-Year Contract

Kyle Lowry is returning to the Philadelphia 76ers on a one-year contract, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

Lowry announced he was returning for his 20th season in the league in a post on his Instagram page on Monday evening.

The 39-year old was a diminished player for the Sixers last season. He was limited to just 35 games due to a nagging hip injury. When he was on the floor, his production dipped drastically. Lowry averaged 3.9 points, 1.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting 35.0% from the field.

While Lowry’s on-court impact plummeted, he should continue to bring value to the roster through his veteran leadership. Lowry should be able to serve as a mentor to the multiple younger players on the Sixers’ roster.

Where does the Sixers roster stand after Lowry’s return? Philadelphia now has 14 players under contract. Assuming Quentin Grimes re-signs with the Sixers, the Sixers will be at the maximum 15 players on the roster. Spending multiple roster spots on aging players, such as Lowry and Eric Gordon, who are expected to have minimal on-court roles is a questionable use of resources. The power forward position lacks depth and should ideally be further addressed this offseason. Barring any moves to clear roster space, the Sixers will be unable to make any more additions to the roster. Philadelphia, for now, appears to be content with where the roster currently stands.
