The Philadelphia Phillies officially added Don Mattingly as bench coach, the team announced on Monday. The move comes after months of speculation.

Speaking at the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski revealed there is “mutual interest” between Don Mattingly and the club regarding the open bench coach position. While nothing is finalized, the tone of Dombrowski’s comments suggests the two sides are trending toward an agreement. At this point, it increasingly feels like a matter of when rather than if Mattingly joins Rob Thomson’s staff.

In a surprising move, Don Mattingly is leaving the Toronto Blue Jays, where he most recently served as bench coach. “Donnie Baseball” is not retiring, and reports suggest he could join the Philadelphia Phillies as Rob Thomson’s bench coach.

The move would reunite two men with deep New York Yankees roots. Mattingly spent 14-seasons in New York as a player, and over a decade hitting coach and bench coach, while Thomson also rose through the Yankees system under Joe Torre. Both bring a track record of leadership, player development, and high-pressure experience.

Mattingly’s managerial résumé includes the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011–2015), winning three NL West titles, and the Miami Marlins (2016–2022), earning 2020 NL Manager of the Year after leading the team to its first postseason since 2003. Known for his steady presence and hitting expertise, Mattingly could provide the Phillies a significant boost in the dugout.
