According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Philadelphia Phillies have interest in free-agent outfielder Cody Bellinger heading into next week’s Winter Meetings. Interest was expected, but now it’s confirmed.

Bellinger is coming off a strong season with the New York Yankees, posting 29 homers, 98 RBI and a .272 average while playing 152 games. He brings left-handed power, defensive flexibility, and a postseason pedigree. And while the Phillies aren’t exactly short on star-level bats, the fit here is obvious.

With right field likely turning over, Bellinger gives the Phillies a cleaner baseball profile: better defense, positional versatility, and athleticism that has been lacking. He can handle multiple outfield spots and cover first base if needed.

Now, this doesn’t mean he’s priority No. 1. Internally, retaining Kyle Schwarber remains the focus. That negotiation will dictate timing, dollars, and direction. But if the Schwarber talks stall or the market shifts, the Phillies aren’t just monitoring Bellinger, they’re positioned to move aggressively.

Next week at the Winter Meetings could clarify everything. For now, the Phillies are “in, and Bellinger is firmly on the board.
