Andrew Painter Headlines Phils Prospects Selected to the 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game Roster But Will Not Participate

The 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game rosters were unveiled on Monday and include two of the Phillies top prospects. RHP Andrew Painter and C Eduardo Tait have been selected to represent the Phillies in the showcase event next month in Atlanta.

Painter, 22, is the No. 1 prospect in the Phillies system and the No. 5 prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline, Major League Baseball’s in-house ranking service. The 6-foot-7-inch righty has spent most of the 2025 season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley as he continues to rehab from Tommy John Surgery. Painter is 3-2 with a 4.24 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP through nine starts with the IronPigs. While Painter’s stats might look a bit rough, he is seeing his first extended game action in over 18-months.
Tait, 18, has burst onto the scene of the Phillies nearly two-years after being signed to a $90,000 contract out of Panama. Tait spent the 2023 season with the Dominican Summer League before joining the Rookie League Phillies for the 2024 season. The lefty catcher played so well with the FCL squad that he earned a promotion to Single-A Clearwater for the back half of 2024. Tait has played the entire 2025 season with the Threshers where he’s slashing .256/.328/.449 with 10 homers, 42 RBI, and a .777 OPS. The 18-year-old jumped into the MLB Pipeline Top 100 (N0. 69) before the season.
Will Painter Pitch in the 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game?
While Painter’s inclusion in the All-Star Futures Game solidifies his place as a top MLB prospect, the righty won’t participate. The Phillies, as they’ve planned to do for many months, will shut him down during the All-Star break. Rob Thomson confirmed the decision on Monday afternoon.
So, what does that mean for Painter?
It’s possible Painter has made his last start in the minor leagues for the foreseeable future. Prior to the season, Phils’ President of Baseball Ops Dave Dombrowski put a post-All-Star break time frame on Painter’s eventual arrival to the Big Leagues. The Phillies are down one starting pitcher with Aaron Nola’s recent move to the 60-day injured list and while Mick Able has pitched well, he could ultimately become part of a trade at the deadline.
Painter’s call might happen sooner rather than later.
About the 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game
The 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game will be held on Saturday, July 12 from Truist Park in suburban Atlanta. First pitch is set for 4:00 PM/EDT with the game telecast exclusively on MLB Network and simulcasts on MLB.TV and MLB.com. As has been the case since 2021, the participating teams will be broken down into AL and NL squads based on each player’s parent team affiliation. The Most Valuable Player of the 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game will be awarded the Larry Doby Award, named after Negro League and MLB Hall of Famer Larry Doby. Past winners of the Larry Doby Award include current Phillies players Nick Castellanos (2012) and Kyle Schwarber (2015).
