Aumont’s debut spoiled by squirrel, Cardinals

Philadelphia, PA - After allowing four runs in the top of the second inning, Phillies pitcher Phillippe Aumont thought things couldn't get any worse. Then, the squirrel appeared.
Leaping across the top of the net protecting the stands to the Phillies dugout, a runaway rodent produced a bit of levity during what proved an insurmountable deficit for the home team in the 12-4 loss to the Cardinals in a matchup between the best and worst teams in baseball tonight.
Phillies ace Cole Hamels, originally slated to start tonight, skipped his start to ensure his health would not be jeopardized. Hamels, who plans to return on Wednesday against the Yankees, was replaced by Aumont, formerly a reliever but starting for AAA Lehigh Valley.
Aumont's well-chronicled control issues were on display tonight, as the lefty walked seven Cardinals in four innings, allowing six runs on just five hits including two-run homers to Kolten Wong and Yadier Molina in the second inning and a two-run double to Jhonny Peralta in the fourth.
Justin De Fratus fared worse, relieving Aumont in the fifth after a whopping 104 pitches through four. De Fratus, in just two innings of work, gave up eight hits and six earned runs in two innings, extending the Cardinals' lead to 11-0 before the top of the fifth was over.
What little offense the Phillies produced was the handiwork of Ryan Howard, whose three-run blast in the bottom of the fifth frame made it 11-3 in favor of the Cardinals. Randal Grichuk's solo shot against De Fratus in the sixth put the scoreline at 12-3.
Cardinals starter Tyler Lyons left after five innings and three runs, giving way to Carlos Villanueva, who threw two scoreless innings. Miguel Socolovich allowed an RBI groundout by Cesar Hernandez in two innings of work, closing out the 12-4 win for the Cardinals (44-23).
Aaron Harang (4-8, 3.24) will take on John Lackey (5-4, 3.59) tomorrow in a 7:05 start, as the Phillies look to tie the series with the Cards.
