Crawford, Garcia Earn Paul Owen Award Honors

The Phillies announced the recipients for the Paul Owen Awards, honoring the best player and pitcher in the Phillies minor league system. Shortstop J.P. Crawford and reliever Luis Garcia were this year's winners.

Crawford, 19, was drafted 16th overall in 2013 and across two levels (Class 'A' Lakewood & Advanced 'A' Clearwater), hit .285 with 11 homers, 48 RBI's, 23 doubles and 24 steals over 123 games. His performance earned him a spot on the US Roster in the Futures Game, where he made some key defensive plays and went 1-for-2 with a run scored. In his two seasons in the minors, Crawford is slashing .292/.384/.404 over 176 games played. JP Crawford is the second youngest player to recieve to the award. Jimmy Rollins earned it in 1997, when he was 18.

Garcia, 27, was signed as a non-drafted free agen in January of 2004. This season, he pitched himself to a 2-1 record to go along with a miniscule 0.96 ERA. He also converted 22 out of 25 save opportunities for the Ironpigs. Over 46.2 innings, Garcia have up just five earned runs and struck out 52. Unfortunately, his minor league success hasn't rolled over to Philadelphia just yet. This season, Garcia has a 9.82 ERA with the big league club over just 7 1/3 innings. In 2013, Garcia pitched in 24 games for the Phils and posted a 3.73 ERA. He has walked 31 batters in 38 2/3 innings in 30 major-league appearances.
