The Flyers’ loss to Buffalo wasn’t the only thing that went off the rails as a live microphone caught Tim Saunders in an unfortunate moment.

The Flyers weren’t the only thing blowing it Tuesday night.

Longtime Flyers radio play-by-play announcer Tim Saunders has been suspended for two games following an on-air gaffe during Philadelphia’s loss to the last-place Buffalo Sabres — a moment that instantly lit up social media and earned a spot in Philly sports radio lore.

The incident occurred late in the third period with the Flyers trailing 3-2. As Saunders tossed to a TV timeout on the Flyers Broadcast Network, he appeared to believe the microphones were off.

They were not.

While you’re down there, would you mind blowing me?” Saunders said on the live broadcast.

Color analyst Todd Fedoruk immediately tried to shut things down.

“I think we’re still on the air, Tim.”

What followed was a long, awkward pause, nervous laughter, and Saunders repeatedly checking — on live radio — whether the broadcast was still hot.

“No we’re not, are we?”

“Are we?”

“Do you have us? Talk to me.”

Unfortunately for Saunders, Philadelphia absolutely still had him.

The Flyers would go on to lose to Buffalo, capping a rough night where both the on-ice product and the broadcast booth needed damage control.

UPDATE

On Friday morning, the Flyers and 97.5 The Fanatic announced a two-game suspension for Saunders due to inappropriate on-air language.

Officially, it’s a brief timeout. Unofficially, it’s a reminder of the oldest rule in live radio: always assume the mic is on.
