The New York Mets somehow managed to make an already bad situation even worse: Pete Alonso is heading to Baltimore, a pivot for the O’s after they were unable to snag Kyle Schwarber. The star first baseman reportedly inked a 5-year, $155 million deal with the Orioles less than a week after Edwin Diaz bolted for LA.
According to reports, the Mets were “allegedly” too worried about committing five years to Alonso because of injury concerns. Translation: they’d rather watch a franchise cornerstone walk away than actually take a calculated risk.
Bold strategy, really.
Now, Baltimore lands one of baseball’s premier sluggers. Meanwhile, the Mets’ front office continues their long tradition of creative ways to frustrate their own fan base.
