Iowa State head coach set to take over Nittany Lions program following recruiting fallout and coaching uncertainty.

According to a report from On3’s Pete Nakos, Penn State is in the process of finalizing a deal to hire Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell as the next leader of the Nittany Lions football program. The move comes after a turbulent coaching search and arrives at a pivotal moment for the program.

Campbell has built a strong résumé over his decade as a head coach. He first rose to prominence at Toledo, where he posted a 35-15 record and established the Rockets as one of the MAC’s most consistent contenders. His offensive identity, player development success, and ability to win with lesser-ranked recruiting classes quickly elevated him into the national spotlight.

At Iowa State, Campbell became one of the most respected program builders in college football. He revitalized an overlooked program, taking the Cyclones to multiple bowl appearances and producing some of the best seasons in school history. Under Campbell, players such as Brock Purdy, Breece Hall, and David Montgomery emerged as national standouts, redefining Iowa State’s identity on the national stage. His hard-nosed style, attention to detail, and reputation for player growth will be expected to transfer to Penn State immediately.

Campbell, however, steps into a tough situation. Penn State’s 2025 recruiting class imploded amid uncertainty, with no permanent coach in place during National Signing Day—leading to missed opportunities and player departures. Rebuilding that class, stabilizing NIL momentum, and restoring confidence among boosters and the fan base will be among Campbell’s first major tests as he begins a new era in State College.
