PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JANUARY 30: Marc Gatcomb #16 of the New York Islanders celebrates his first NHL goal with teammates during the second period against the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center on January 30, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

For the second straight night, offense was non-existent for the Flyers. On the heels of a 5-0 loss to the Devils on Wednesday, the Flyers replicated the result just over 24 hours later.

The Islanders scored twice in the second period, as the Flyers fell, 3-0, on Thursday night at Wells Fargo Center.

The fireworks started early, as Scott Laughton dropped the gloves with Maxim Tsyplakov at 4:51 of the first period. Tsyplakov’s hit resulted in an injury to Ryan Poehling on Jan. 16. Tsyplakov was suspended for three games and did not play against the Flyers last Friday as a result.

On a four-minute power play, the Flyers appeared to get the first goal of the game from Matvei Michkov. But Michkov’s shot through a screen was disallowed after a coach’s challenge for goalie interference.

Through 20 minutes, shots were 10-8 Islanders.

The Islanders finally broke through at 10:02 of the second. Simon Holmstrom followed up a blocked shot and fired a shot off the post and in for his 13th goal of the season to make it 1-0.

With under three minutes left in the second, a bad line change proved costly for the Flyers. A 2-on-0 was finished off by Marc Gatcomb for his first NHL goal, making it a 2-0 game at 17:08.

Through two periods, shots were 20-17 Flyers.

The Flyers played the third period with 10 forwards, as Morgan Frost left the game with 8:22 remaining in the second and Michkov was benched after the first Islanders goal. The Islanders essentially put the game away with a goal by Kyle Palmieri with 10:07 remaining in the third.

That was more than enough for Ilya Sorokin, who made 23 saves in a shutout win. Ivan Fedotov made 25 saves on 28 shots in the loss.

The Flyers return to action on Sunday afternoon against the Colorado Avalanche at 3 p.m.
