Phillies Add Bullpen Arm Jonathan Bowlan

The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired right-handed pitcher Jonathan Bowlan from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for left-hander Matt Strahm, the team announced.

Bowlan, 29, appeared in 34 games for the Royals in 2025, posting a 3.86 ERA over 44 1/3 innings. He struck out 46 hitters and was used primarily in a middle-relief role, occasionally covering multiple innings. For his major-league career, Bowlan owns a 4.32 ERA in 50 innings across 37 appearances.

The move provides the Phillies with additional bullpen depth while also creating significant financial flexibility. By moving Strahm’s contract, the ballclub is expected to save nearly $7 million, money that could be used to address other roster needs during the offseason such as J.T. Realmuto.

Bowlan is out of minor-league options, meaning he will need to remain on the active roster or be exposed to waivers. He will not reach free agency until 2032, giving the Phillies years of team control.
