The Phillies want to retain Ranger Suárez, but his projected three-year, $75 million price tag may test the team’s pitching budget.

According to MLB Insider Jim Bowden, the Philadelphia Phillies would like to re-sign starting pitcher Ranger Suárez. The club will make an offer in an effort to keep the Joe Cool lefty.

As previously reported, the expectation is Suárez will receive somewhere in the neighborhood of three years and $75 million in free agency. It’s not yet known whether the Phillies would match that kind of AAV to retain their workhorse, especially as they continue to balance long-term payroll flexibility.

The Phillies are prepared to move on if need be. The club believes they have enough pitching depth to replace Suárez, including the eventual return and debut of top prospect Andrew Painter, as well as a collection of internal options the front office feels confident in moving forward.

Still, Philadelphia values Suárez highly, both for his postseason track record and rotation stability. Make no doubts about it, they will remain involved as his market develops.
