Phillies lose to Reds as pitching falls apart

Final: Phillies 7, Reds 4

CINCINNATI — The Philadelphia Phillies (1-2) were unable to outlast the offense of the Cincinnati Reds, as they were defeated 7-4 Thursday afternoon despite Daniel Nava and his two home runs. The Phillies go onto to lose the series at Great American Ball Park 2 games to 1.

The cold and damp weather did not stop Phillies starter RHP Clay Buchholz from getting off to a nice start in his season debut. However a rough 3 run, fourth inning put a damper on his start.

RHP Vince Velasquez will take the mound Friday afternoon in the Phillies home opener. He will face RHP ace Max Scherzer, who went 20-7 with a 2.96 ERA last season.

Daniel Nava was able to get the Phillies off to an early 1 run lead in the first. In his debut for the Phillies, Nava had himself a day, going deep twice and driving in 3 runs. The other lone Phillies run came off Rookie Davis’ wild pitch as Odubel Herrera was able to score easily from third. It was a rough MLB debut for Rookie Davis, as he would last just three innings, while giving up four runs on five hits.

Buchholz held the Reds offense to one run until an RBI single to shortstop Zach Cozart in the bottom of the fourth inning. This would lead to two more runs to tie the game at four, courtesy of runs batted in from Stuart Turner and Scooter Gennett.

Buchholz was pulled after five innings. He threw 77 pitches, 51 for strikes and allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks. LHP Adam Morgan came on for relief in the bottom of the six to replace Buchholz on the mound. Morgan went on to give up a solo shot to right center to pinch hitter Micheal Lorenzen. Lorenzen's home run gave the Reds a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the six.

Having to go to the bullpen early, the Reds relief pitchers teamed together to put forth a great pitching effort. The team of Wandy Peralta, Cory Reed, Tony Cingrani and Blake Wood combined to give up 0 Phillies hits through five innings of work.

Left fielder Adam Duvall was able to crack the game wide open when he went deep to left field in the bottom of the seventh to make the game 7-4. Duvall finished the day batting an impressive two for four with two runs batted in.

Drew Storen came into close the game for the Reds. He surrendered the first Phillies hit in five innings to Andres Blanco, who singled to first. Storen eventually got pinch hitter Tommy Joseph to ground out to second base to end the game.
