Phillies Lose Tyler Goeddel to the Cincinnati Reds

When the Phillies needed a roster spot for bench bats Daniel Nava and Brock Stassi, we knew multiple players would lose their 40-man roster spots.  One move was made when the Phillies traded Alec Asher to the Baltimore Orioles.   The Phillies soon thereafter designated the contract of Tyler Goeddel for assignment.  

We learned Wednesday that Goeddel was claimed by the Cincinnati Reds. The Phillies likely tried to sneak Goeddel through waivers and keep him in the Phillies system.  But Goeddel, a December 2015 Rule 5 pick by the Phillies first overall in the draft, likely had other teams already well-aware of Goeddel's abilities.  

The Reds, who picked second in that draft, probably had Goeddel on their radar before taking Jake Cave from the Yankees. The Reds will not place Goeddel in the Major Leagues just yet.  Goeddel will report to Triple-A Louisville now.  The Reds made room on their 40-man roster by moving pitcher Anthony DeSclafani to the 60-day disabled list.

Goeddel batted just .192 for the Phillies in 2016 after jumping from Double-A.  Goeddel is best remembered for throwing out Eugenio Suarez of the Reds last season from left field to secure a Phillies victory.
