Boston’s pursuit of JT Realmuto adds pressure to a Phillies team lacking a clear replacement behind the plate.

As MLB free agency drags on, the Boston Red Sox have been connected to another Phillies free agent.

The Sox are reportedly interested in a reunion with designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. Now The Athletic is reporting that Boston is also showing interest in free-agent catcher JT Realmuto, adding yet another twist to Philadelphia’s already complicated offseason.

Realmuto, who hit the market after the 2025 season, remains one of the most intriguing veterans available. Even at 34-years-old, he’s regarded as one of the best defenders with strong receiving skills, explosive athleticism, and enough offensive potential to stabilize a lineup. For Boston, the logic is obvious: they need a steady presence behind the plate and a leader who can help push a young roster forward.

For the Phillies, Realmuto’s market is far more worrisome.

Philadelphia simply doesn’t have a real replacement lined up if he departs. Garrett Stubbs’ recent MLB/MiLB split contract underscores his role as a depth catcher, not a full-time solution. Rafael Marchán remains an internal candidate, but he’s never been tasked with running a pitching staff over a full 162-game grind—let alone one built to compete for a pennant. Losing Realmuto would leave a major defensive, leadership, and game-planning void that the current roster is not equipped to fill.

With Boston now circling, the pressure shifts back to the Phillies: make a competitive push to keep Realmuto, or risk entering 2026 without the cornerstone of their catching operation.
