The Philadelphia Flyers relied on the production of their top six and the goaltending of Alex Lyon as they survived a bout with the New York Rangers, 4-3.

With the Philadelphia Flyers’ hold on a playoff spot fading, the Orange and Black will need a win over their rivals, the New York Rangers. 

In merely a few short weeks, the Flyers have managed to almost play themselves right out of playoff contention. Late February saw them climb to the top of the Metropolitan Division with a 12-game point streak. Since then, it seemed as if the Ides of March have struck. 

Three second-period goals knocked Petr Mrazek from the game and the Flyers had to furiously rally back to even get one point in the standings. In the end, the rally for two points fell short, as the Flyers dropped the decision to the Detroit Red Wings, 5-4, in a shootout on Tuesday night at Little Caesar’s Arena.

Four of the Flyers next five games will come on the road, starting with Tuesday night’s meeting with the struggling Detroit Red Wings.

The Flyers announced on Monday that forward Michael Raffl will be out for two weeks with an upper-body injury.

After rallying for four goals in the third period of Saturday’s game in Carolina, the Flyers turned in one of their best games in March, a 6-3 win on home ice against the Washington Capitals. The four-point stretch gives the Flyers some breathing room with just nine games left on the schedule before the regular season comes to an end.

The Flyers scored three goals in the second, highlighted by Oskar Lindblom’s first NHL goal, and three goals in the third, two by Wayne Simmonds, to claim a 6-3 win over the Washington Capitals on Sunday night at Wells Fargo Center.

The Flyers play host to the Metropolitan Division leading Washington Capitals, who carry a two-point lead into Sunday’s game.
