Overtime has not been kind to the Flyers this season, and that run continued as T.J. Brodie scored at 1:59 of overtime to hand the Flyers their sixth straight loss, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Center.
A disappointing and trying season reaches its halfway point as the Flyers play host to the Calgary Flames. Game time is at 1 p.m.
The United States came away with a 2-1 win over Russia in the first semi-final match to advance to Saturday’s Gold Medal Game. They will face Finland, who defeated Switzerland by a score of 6-1.
The Flyers claimed goalie Mike McKenna off waivers on Friday. If McKenna sees the ice for a start, they would also claim an infamous record.
The Flyers nearly pulled off another improbable third-period rally. It’s entertaining for sure, but it usually means that the two periods leading up to the rally weren’t very good. The Flyers did not have a good road trip by any stretch, and they brought the poor play home with them in another loss to the Hurricanes.
As is the case when you dig such a hole, one mistake can sink any comeback effort. A late goal for the Hurricanes sealed the deal on a fifth straight loss for the Flyers by a score of 5-3 on Thursday night at Wells Fargo Center.
The Flyers return home for the first time in 2019 to play the Carolina Hurricanes, a team that defeated them on a four-game road trip on New Year’s Eve. The Flyers are currently on a four-game losing streak. Game time is at 7 p.m.
The United States moved to the semi-finals with a 3-1 win over Czech Republic in Wednesday’s quarterfinals action, while heavyweights Sweden and Canada were both handed upset losses, ending their tournament.
Chuck Fletcher should have seen enough. Changes to the roster don’t happen all at once or overnight, but instead of looking for ways to save this season, the Flyers should turn focus on selling where they can and making preparations for next season and beyond.
The Flyers have seven prospects in 2019 World Junior Championships, tied for the most around the NHL. All seven have advanced past the group rounds to the tournament portion, which begins on Wednesday with the quarterfinals.
