The Flyers have their new GM in place. The team officially announced the hiring of Chuck Fletcher on Tuesday as the eighth general manager in franchise history.
According to a report from the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News, the Flyers will name Chuck Fletcher as the new GM of the team.
This is the wild week that has been for the Flyers as an organization from the decision to fire Ron Hextall to the aftermath, the press conference, the information surfacing as a result of the move and the opinions of the move being right or wrong. One week after the move, as the Flyers move closer to hiring a new GM, it’s time to put a wrap on the talk about Hextall: the good, the bad and the ugly.
In Pittsburgh, though, the Flyers had one of their better wins of the season. It wasn’t a pretty win, but between Anthony Stolarz’s strong play in net and contributions up and down the lineup, the Flyers managed to hold off the Penguins and steal a win in a time when nothing is coming easy and emotions are certainly high.
A shorthanded goal by Dale Weise proved to be the game-winner as Anthony Stolarz earned his first NHL win in since April 1, 2017 as the Flyers defeated the Penguins, 4-2, on Saturday night.
The Flyers face the Pittsburgh Penguins, a team that has certainly had its struggles this season. But last season’s playoff series, when the Flyers were heavily outplayed by the Penguins, is still in recent memory.
It’s rare for a recently fired employee to speak to the media after his dismissal, and even more unlikely after several days. But Ron Hextall spoke on Friday and offered a number of thoughts on his process, where the Flyers were, where they were going and how he feels in the days since being dismissed.
It was a question five years ago and it remains one now. The Flyers need a fresh perspective. A look in the mirror should show that the dismissal of Ron Hextall isn’t the only change that needs to happen.
Chuck Fletcher, the former GM of the Minnesota Wild and currently a senior advisor with the New Jersey Devils, is atop the list of candidates for the Flyers GM job. The Devils granted the Flyers permission to speak with Fletcher regarding the open GM position on Wednesday, according to a report from TSN’s Bob McKenzie.
The changes keep coming. The Flyers announced that assistant GM Chris Pryor and assistant coach Gord Murphy have been fired.
