There’s sad news coming from NovaCare Complex this Christmas Day. Former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey has passed away at the age of 79 after a hard-fought three-year battle with oral cancer.

Bergey, who was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 1988, arrived in Philadelphia before the 1974 season and is considered one of the agents of change for the club. Bergey, along with soon-to-be head coach Dick Vermeil, helped create a culture of winning that would ultimately culminate with a trip to Super Bowl XV in New Orleans in January 1981.

As a player with the Cincinnati Bengals and Eagles, Bergey’s accolades include two first-team All-Pro selections, three second-team All-Pro selections, five Pro Bowl selections, and the 1969 American Football League Defensive Rookie of the Year award. His final professional game was the Eagles’ 27-10 loss in Super Bowl XV.

Bergey was a fixture in the Delaware Valley in his post-playing career. He served as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles Radio Network’s pregame and postgame shows for nearly 25-years. As an ambassador for the team, Bergey was heavily involved in Philadelphia Eagles alumni and Philadelphia Eagle Charities efforts.

Funeral services for Bergey will be announced at a later date.

Sports Talk Philly sends its thoughts and condolences to the Bergey family during this difficult time.
