Eagles Postgame Report: Birds Escape Low-Scoring Primetime Game At Packers

The Eagles were thrown up against yet another playoff team on Monday Night football after the bye.

The Packers got the ball to start and looked like they were moving the ball pretty well, but Jalyx Hunt stepped up for the sack that lead to forcing a punt.

The Birds offense came out with the most dink and dunk offense they’ve had all season that was successful. It was an incredible 16-play drive that took up almost nine minutes of clock. The Eagles were nearly assured points, until a brilliant call on 3rd and 8 for the QB run. It worked out great and was truly an excellent play call as Hurts had the first down before contact. Unfortunately for the Eagles, however, he fumbled the ball away when going down, snatching away the Eagles chance at points and handed the Packers great field position.

The defense had Hurts’ back and forced the three-and-out, but slips by the OL and RB on two straight plays left the Eagles behind the sticks and they answered with their own three-and out to hand the ball back. The Birds defense forced another punt, but Hurts came out with three straight near-interceptions that left the Eagles with yet another punt after just three plays.

The Eagles moved the chains, but the OL set them back to a 1st and 25 after they had already lost Lane Johnson. They could have converted despite the one penalty, but two in a row was too much and left the Eagles to punt yet again.

Kelee Ringo changed the Packers fortunes with a hold, changing what would have pinned them at their own 8-yard line to letting them start at the 33-yard line. The Packers got a few under passes going and suddenly the Eagles defense wasn’t covering guys and allowing first down after first down. Nakobe Dean came up with a sack that forced the fumble and newly acquired defender Jaelan Phillips fell on it for the recovery to prevent easy points for Green Bay. Jalen Hurts came out with more ugly passes to ensure the Eagles didn’t score and the game remained scoreless at the half.

The Eagles moved the ball well once again on their first drive after the half, but it stalled out deep in Packers territory after Fred Johnson missed a block and then Hurts took a delay of game. That forced the Eagles to settle for a field goal.

The Packers also moved the ball well for a bit, but the defense forced them into fourth and long at the edge of field goal range. A drop let the Eagles get a turnover on downs, but they went three and out after another negative run was thrown into the mix following a pass that went just to the line of scrimmage.

The Packers looked like they had momentum once again, but an illegal formation bailed the Eagles defense out and allowed them the chance to force the punt. Gibson made an attempt to return the punt very deep, but the Packers had their foot on the line resulting it a touchback for the Eagles and giving them 19.5 extra yards to work with.

They seemed to be on the path for another quick punt but Barkley leaked free into open space and got a block deep downfield from AJ Brown for a 41-yard gain. The next play went deep to DeVonta Smith for the game’s first touchdown and a two-score lead.

Unfortunately, the Eagles found themselves with not Nakobe Dean, but Jihaad Campbell in deep coverage, who gave up a 21-yard penalty. The defense then folded entirely and gave up two big chunks to allow a touchdown and put Green Bay back into the game.

The offense came out with a garbage play call and a poor throw that left the Eagles with a 3rd and 12. DeVonta Smith made the grab for 16 yards, however, to save the drive. Unfortunately, it was a trash throw from Hurts that didn’t give Smith a chance later on that stopped the clock before he took a delay of game to get the ball back to the Packers down just 3 with 2:18 and two timeouts.

Phillips blew up the 4th and 1 play to get the ball back as Reed Blankenship forced the fumble on the stopped runner and recovered the ball. The Eagles were able to burn the two timeouts that the Packers still had and bring the clock down to 33 seconds on 4th and 6 at the 36-yard line. The Eagles went for it and an underthrown pass to AJ Brown resulted in a turnover on downs with 27 seconds left.

The game came down to 5 seconds with no timeouts and the Packers needing to go for a 64-yard field goal attempt. Just short on the practice attempt, the Packers brought out their offense and threw an incompletion to bring out the field goal unit with 2 seconds now.  The snap was low and the kick went way off to the left, not even close as the Eagles survive a low-scoring potential playoff match.

The Eagles advance to 7-2 and once again claim the top seed in the NFC with the tie breakers, but have another tough test next week when they host the playoff-bound Lions (who claim the division lead in the North with the Packers loss).

Offensive MVP: DeVonta Smith

I was ready to pick AJ Brown, but Smith had the nice grab on an underthrown ball for the touchdown and then saved the Eagles very next drive to convert on 3rd and 12. It was a poor offensive game all around, but he recorded 69 yards and a touchdown on four receptions. He was also in position to save the drive yet again later on that same drive had Hurts thrown anything close to a competently thrown ball on 3rd and 8.

Defensive MVP: Jaelan Phillips

This was great showcase for Howie Roseman as the Phillips acquisition paid off already. He played a ton of snaps less than a week later and was impactful. He had six tackles and two QB hits along with a fumble recovery. Of course, he also had the key stop inside of two minutes to five the Eagles a chance to win the game.

Game Notes

• It should be a focus for those that watched the game that AJ Brown had that great block to spring the longest play of the game to Barkley. An unselfish play.
• The team put Bigsby and Shipley both in more and actually used both of them early in this game. It certainly seemed like it should continue as they were all effective – no reason to wear down Barkley on every single play if the backups are gaining decent chunks of yardage, too. It’s just not worth the injury risk.
• A rough game for Dickerson as far as pre-snap issues. Same thing with Jordan Mailata.
• The hope would be the Eagles offense was hampered by slips they won’t see the rest of the year at any other venue, so the low scoring isn’t as big of an issue in this one as it otherwise might be.
• There was an 11-yard pass to Shipley on 3rd and 10, and that was an impressive escape by Hurts and a very good catch from Shipley in an area he didn’t have much space as he approached the sideline with a defender right on him. With he and Barkley having that ability, it’s kind of a surprise that the Eagles don’t utilize their running backs more as downfield threats on wheel routes and the like as their receptions are mostly limited to screens behind the line.
• After his fumble, Hurts was essentially useless in the first half. He went from can’t miss on that first drive to a fumble and then threw three straight would-be interceptions. All it took was worse defense from Dallas Goedert or better defense from the Packers, and they have a shot at three different pick-sixes in the start of the second quarter on just plain awful throws. He then proceeded to have every throw well off target and only threw past 4-5 yards downfield when there was no time left on the clock at the half.
• The coaching staff should have been absolutely berating guys on the sidelines in the second quarter. Two straight unforced penalties to stall the offense just as they started re-gaining momentum and then Kelee Ringo taking a penalty that cost 25-yards on special teams immediately following that drive. That’s the type of play you’d expect from the league’s worst team, not a team battling for the top seed.
• The Eagles had a successful drive after the half once again but for whatever reason, it only featured TE and RB. No receivers were targeted. This was especially painful with the deep attempt to Calcaterra. It was a bad pass, but any of the Eagles four receivers is out there and they at least have a chance to speed up or dive to catch that. It’s kind of crazy that what was potentially the deepest pass of the game was intended for the guy who is maybe like the 7th or 8th best option to pass to on the offense.
• Phillips did not require much time like most trade acquisitions – Fangio threw him right out there for a large number of snaps after being with the team for less than a week. Definitely added a different type of player to the defense.

Injury Notes

• Quinyon Mitchell was shaken up at the end of the Packers first drive. He did return later on in the game.
• Darius Cooper went out from the game in the first half, seemingly after he slipped running a deep route. He did return later in the game.
• Lane Johnson went down with a knee/ankle injury later in the second quarter after a defender dove into his legs while he was blocking. He was replaced by Fred Johnson and went into the locker room. Lane did come out after the half, but it appeared he was more available in case of emergency and did not come into the game until late in the fourth quarter.
