Former Eagle Mekhi Becton Voicing Concerns With Chargers: “Very Frustrating For Me”

The Eagles offensive line has not been the same dominant force it was in the 2024 season.

A large part of that has been injuries as the Eagles have, of course, been without Lane Johnson for the past few weeks, but more than that appeared to rush back both Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens who dealt with injuries through the playoffs and Super Bowl last year, ending with each getting late surgeries and each seemingly never getting back to 100% to play this season.

The other change has been Tyler Steen playing instead of Mekhi Becton.

While Steen has been a good pass blocker for most of the season, he has not been the run blocker Becton was. The Eagles lost Becton after he had a career year in Philly and was able to cash in on a two-year, $20 million deal.

While you can’t blame the former first-rounder for taking the cash, it sure seems like he isn’t happy.

Playing with a worse offensive line around him, Becton has struggled in general but also only played 69% of snaps – occasionally being removed from games that he felt he should have continued playing in.

Overall, while the Eagles might have benefitted from having Becton, it was a good thing they didn’t commit that much capital to him given his step back in play.

For the future, though, these comments and the step back in play don’t seem sustainable for both sides as Becton carries a $12.5 million cap hit next season if the Chargers don’t cut him at season end to save $10M in cap.

For the Birds, that means there may be a player familiar with much of the staff and the locker room who could be a starter or top backup on the market next year who may not cost much (due to the poorer play this season) and who seems to have liked playing for the Eagles franchise more than any other in his career that they could bring in without it counting against their compensatory pick formula.

That makes this something for Eagles fans to watch going forward.

The team will see Becton next Monday when they head to LA to take on the Chargers.
