Trotter Jr

It might be time to sharpen the axes again, Philly.

When it was revealed emerging Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean was lost for the remainder of the NFL playoffs, the question became who will be able to replace Dean’s productivity and consistency?

Seventh year veteran Oren Burks filled in during Sunday’s win over Green Bay and played admirably – five total tackles including four solo tackles. And while Burks will likely get the lion’s share of the reps on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL Divisional playoff, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio made it known that Jeremiah Trotter Jr. might factor into the plans.

When asked about the linebacker situation, and Trotter Jr. specifically, Fangio had the following to say:

“Yeah, I think Trot’s got a good future, and that future may be now. [Chuckles] He’s got good instincts, really likes the game, smart, got a lot of good qualities.”

  • Eagles DC Vic Fangio on Jeremiah Trotter Jr.

The chuckle, the smirk. Fangio is cookin’ up something special for Sunday.

The son of Eagles’ Hall of Famer Jeremiah Trotter Sr., Trotter Jr’s game is a bit different than his old man’s.

The elder Axe Man was a thumper. He would diagnose a play and run right through whomever was in his way to tackle the ball carrier. The younger Axe Man is a bit more nuanced, while he can diagnose a play like his father –hell, he’s been watching film his whole life– he’s more of a finesse tackler. A bit undersized by NFL standards, Trotter Jr. plays a lot like the guy he is potentially replacing.

That bodes well for a potential coming out party on Sunday in the playoffs.
