Nay Nay: Jeffrey Lurie Denies Rumors Of Potential Celtics Purchase

Last week, rumors began to hit that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie was interested in purchasing the Boston Celtics.
During media availability on Monday night, Lurie told PHLY’s Zach Berman that he was not interested in purchasing any other teams.
More Lurie on Celtics: “I don’t expect anything, really. I would never say never, but I’m not looking to own another sports franchise. The Celtics, again, are exceptional. They’re so well run. They’re so talented. They’re my childhood team. However, I do not expect that to… https://t.co/m7Zy9rxKW0

While he didn’t say it was totally impossible and admitted he admitted his hometown team, he reiterated his focus was on the team he’s already owned since 1994.
It’s not something that’s top of mind. And my whole focus is on my love of the Eagles and to win another Super Bowl for Philadelphia. And I’m obsessed.
The Eagles, under Lurie, have grown into one of the top-run franchises in the league. Despite some turmoil and/or drama in recent years, the Eagles remain one of the winningest teams in the league since the turn of the century and are often cited as a model organization with teams plucking coordinator and, even more so, front office folks for promotions year after year to try and build some of the success the Birds have had.
In sports, you’ve got good owners and bad. There are the good who actually care about the city, the fans, and the team. In Philadelphia, fans are lucky to have two in John Middleton and Jeffrey Lurie.
Lurie being such a good owner is why the initial report was so concerning – is there any good owners who own multiple teams in rival cities? Not really – they only care about money at that point and screw winning, the city, the fans, etc.
For example, imagine if there was some rich prick who decided he wanted to buy a hockey team in New Jersey, a basketball team in Philadelphia, and a football team in DC. Would that person care about those areas? Of course not, they are directly competing and rivalry markets. Heck, they’d probably ruin the comradery of a city by not allowing one of their teams to congratulate another in that city for an absolute blow out win because it embarrassed one of the owners’ other teams…
So Lurie’s comments Monday should be appreciated by all Eagles fans – he’s reinforced he cares about winning and the team he already has and not just about the money.
If something does change, however, perhaps there’d be an NBA team in Philadelphia he could purchase and he could send Josh Harris to leech off of some other city with a perpetually mediocre team designed to wring fans off any cash they might have, instead.
