Jeffrey Lurie to Buy the Boston Celtics?

Could Philadelphia Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie be getting into the basketball business?
On the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Ringer’s Bill Simmons mentioned Lurie is in the running to buy his “hometown” Boston Celtics. And it’s not like Simmons is just throwing stuff against the wall to take advantage of the Eagles second Super Bowl trip in three years. The man is a well-connected basketball scribe! Sure, he’s not Shams…but he knows what he’s talking about.
Mentioned this near the end of tonight’s podcast: Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is in the running to buy the Boston Celtics. He’s a Boston native w/ degrees from Clark, Brandeis AND B.U. His first big company was called Chestnut Hill Productions. Huge Celts fan obviously.

Lurie’s $195 million investment in the team has certainly paid off. The Eagles were worth a reported $6.6 billion heading into the 2024 NFL regular season, according to Forbes. Lurie was able to sell a minority stake in the team in early December. The 8% sale of the Birds, who were valued at $8.6 billion, certainly netted Lurie a nice chunk of change.
There was some rumbling that Lurie would use the money from the minority sale of the Eagles to fund a new stadium. But it turns out the money was to buy the Philadelphia 76ers archrivals.
