Flyers Postgame Report: Knies Scores in 3rd to Lift Leafs Past Flyers
Through two periods, Tuesday’s game between the Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs looked a lot like Sunday’s. A 2-2 tie would need to be broken in the third or later.
Unlike Sunday’s game, this one never reached overtime. Toronto took the lead with 6:39 to play, handing the Flyers another 3-2 loss at Wells Fargo Center.
The Flyers opened the scoring at 8:19 of the first. Travis Konecny took a shot that deflected off the stick of Ryan Reaves and beat Joseph Woll for his 19th goal of the season.
The Flyers killed off two penalties in the opening period while holding the Leafs to just two shots on goal. The Flyers took 10 shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes.
An early power play for the Leafs allowed them to tie the game in the first two minutes of the second. John Tavares was able to pick his spot from the left circle, firing one to the far post and in to make it 1-1 on his 20th of the season at 1:19.
At 7:14, with the teams at four-on-four, the Flyers re-gained the lead. Noah Cates made a great play to steal the puck in the corner and centered for Konecny, who beat Woll through the five-hole for his 20th goal of the season to make it 2-1.
The lead lasted just 41 seconds, as Auston Matthews scored on the power play at the other end of the ice at 7:55 to make it 2-2 with his 13th of the season.
Through two periods, shots were 19-9 Flyers.
The Leafs took the lead with 6:39 remaining in the third. Off a face-off, Morgan Rielly‘s shot-pass was deflected by Matthew Knies and in for his 16th of the season to make it 3-2.
A late push by the Flyers, which included two power plays, fell short, as Woll finished with 30 saves on 32 shots in the win. Ivan Fedotov made 14 saves on 17 shots in the loss.
Matthews, Tavares, and Mitch Marner each had two points for the Leafs.
The Flyers are back on home ice on Thursday night to take on the Dallas Stars at 7 p.m.
