According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, sources indicate the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to meet with free agent Bo Bichette in the coming days as the club evaluates major roster options.

Gelb reported that the Phillies have long held interest in Bichette but did not believe they would be in position to pursue him. That stance has changed amid the ongoing contract standoff with J.T. Realmuto, though Gelb emphasized the Bichette pursuit is not a negotiating tactic designed to force Realmuto into a deal. The market for Bichette, according to Gelb, is expected to be competitive.

That reporting was further reinforced by Jon Heyman, who added that the Phillies and Bichette are scheduled to meet Monday, and that there is “strong” mutual interest between the two sides.

Heyman’s report solidifies Philadelphia as a legitimate contender in the Bichette sweepstakes rather than a speculative suitor, signaling a potential pivot point for the organization as it explores contingency plans should talks with Realmuto remain unresolved.

From a roster-construction standpoint, adding Bichette would almost certainly trigger a significant infield shakeup. Such a move would likely mean moving on from Alec Bohm, while Bryson Stott could shift to third base to accommodate Bichette’s arrival.

There’s a growing sense around the league that the Philadelphia Phillies may be doing more than just kicking the tires on free agent infielder Bo Bichette.

While the Toronto Blue Jays continue negotiating with their franchise shortstop on a potential return, multiple reports now suggest the Phillies are “heavily engaged” in the Bichette sweepstakes, the exact profile of the oft-speculated “mystery team.”

The timing couldn’t be more intriguing. Recent offseason reports indicate an apparent impasse between the Phillies and free agent catcher J.T. Realmuto, with no clear resolution on a new contract. If Philadelphia ultimately loses patience or shifts priorities, Bichette — a right-handed middle-of-the-order presence — becomes a VERY compelling alternative.

Bichette comes off a 2025 season hitting .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs, finishing among the league leaders in batting average and hits. Over his seven-year career with Toronto, he’s compiled a .294 batting average, 111 homers, 437 RBIs and 904 hits, proving to be one of the more consistent offensive forces in the baseball.
