MLB free agency officially kicked off a few weeks ago but now moves are finally being made. The Seattle Mariners kicked off the 2025-26 hot stove season by signing Josh Naylor to a contract. Now, all eyes turn to the rest of the free agency class which includes Kyle Schwarber, Ranger Suarez, and JT Realmuto.

Qualifying Offers Rejected

As expected, Kyle Schwarber and Ranger Suárez both declined the Phillies’ qualifying offers, officially sending them into the heart of the hot stove season. By extending the offers, the Phillies positioned themselves to recoup draft-pick compensation should either player sign elsewhere. Due to the team’s payroll level and their status above the luxury-tax threshold, Philadelphia would receive compensatory picks after the fourth round. J.T. Realmuto, meanwhile, was exempt from the QO process because he previously received one from the club.

Speaking of Schwarber

The Phillies still hope to bring Schwarber back, but it’s becoming increasingly clear they’ll face stiff competition. According to ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan, early contract offers for Schwarber are reportedly starting at five years with an average annual value around $30 million. Passan notes that nearly every team in baseball has at least checked in, with the Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Toronto Blue Jays, and — yes, seriously — the Pittsburgh Pirates among the clubs involved in conversations.

In short, if the Phillies want to re-sign Schwarber, the price is climbing quickly, and there’s no indication he’ll be taking a hometown discount to stay in Philadelphia.

Realistic Contract for Realmuto

However, J.T. Realmuto might be willing to take a bit less to stay in Philadelphia — or at least fewer years than initially expected. In the same report, Passan notes Realmuto “won’t demand more than two years,” which is viewed as a favorable development for the Phillies. But that flexibility works both ways — it’s just as appealing to other teams.

Given his standing as one of the league’s premier defensive catchers, Realmuto is expected to draw strong interest as free agency kicks into high gear. His openness to a shorter-term deal could widen the field of potential suitors, even as the Phillies remain hopeful they can retain a player who has been central to their clubhouse and postseason runs.

Looking Abroad

According to Nikkan Sports, the Phillies are “particularly keen” on Japanese free agent Munetaka Murakami. The power-hitting infielder, one of the most prolific sluggers in Nippon Professional Baseball, likely profiles as a designated hitter for a team like the Phillies. At just 26 years old, he could be considered a potential replacement should Schwarber walk. MLB teams have until December 22 to strike a deal with the man often dubbed the “Japanese Babe Ruth” — arguably, that nickname should officially belong to Ohtani.
