Report: 76ers, Justin Edwards Agree to 3-Year Contract Extension

The Philadelphia 76ers are signing Justin Edwards to a three-year contract extension, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. The new deal includes two years of guaranteed salary, including earning $2 million for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
Edwards’ previous contract contained a team option worth $1.9 million for next season. The Sixers, as part of the new extension, declined his team option in order to get him locked up for the next three years.
It took some time for the undrafted rookie to make his way onto the floor. Once he started getting playing time, Edwards’ potential quickly became evident. He averaged 10.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals while shooting 36.3% from 3-point range. He quickly became known for his strong outside shooting and aggressive perimeter defense.
The Philadelphia native has the potential to become a key piece of the rotation moving forward. The Sixers saw that and rewarded him with a long-term extension which includes multiple years of guaranteed money.
In addition to signing Edwards to an extension, the Sixers also declined Jared Butler’s $2.3 million team option. Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports was first to report the move. Butler, who was acquired at last season’s trade deadline, averaged 11.5 points and 4.9 assists in 28 games with the Sixers.
There is a chance, considering Butler’s production last season, the Sixers could elect to re-sign him later this offseason. However, a minimum salary for someone with his level of NBA experience would be just under $2.5 million per year. If the Sixers were going to keep Butler around, they likely would have just accepted his team option. For now, Butler’s brief time in Philadelphia has come to an end.
