The Flyers embark on a three-game Western Canada trip that starts against the Calgary Flames on Monday night. Game time is 9 p.m.
After a lifeless third period against the Sharks that capped off a ninth-straight loss and was followed with a closed-door meeting, you would think there would be some more inspired play by the Flyers. Not even close, as the Flyers displayed a similar lifeless and uninspired approach in a 3-0 loss to the Bruins for their 10th straight loss on Saturday.
The losing streak hit 10 games on Saturday with another lifeless and lacking performance in a 3-0 loss to the Boston Bruins, the Flyers sixth shutout loss of the season.
With three days off between games, the Flyers have had time to let a nine-game losing streak sit and stir up a fan base that can’t make much sense of the direction of this team. The Flyers will look to start to right the ship by hosting the Boston Bruins. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Although it may sound difficult, here are a three reasons to stay calm despite the Flyers losing streak and not look for the coach and/or GM’s heads.
What Flyers GM Ron Hextall said on Tuesday night was a combination of being completely delusional but also issuing a warning, or better yet, a challenge to the Flyers. The premise: I still believe in this team and think it can compete for a playoff spot, but I’m not afraid to take action if this continues.
In an interview on NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Philly Sports Talk on Wednesday, Flyers GM Ron Hextall made clear that Dave Hakstol’s job is not in jeopardy. “He’s the guy,” Hextall said. “Dave Hakstol is our coach and he’s going to remain our coach.”
The play on the ice showed a team that has essentially given up on everything and tuned out the coach, as fans chanted for the firing of the coach. But the Flyers players said otherwise following the game and a closed-door meeting called by captain Claude Giroux, backing and supporting Dave Hakstol.
After the Flyers ninth straight loss put the finishing touch on a month where they posted a 2-5-7 record, GM Ron Hextall spoke about his team in the Flyers locker room. And he essentially doubled down on the team’s potential. “I still believe we’re a playoff team,” Hextall said.
This season is slipping quickly on the Flyers, and it’s because of efforts like the one shown on Tuesday night against the San Jose Sharks, which sent the Flyers to their ninth straight loss. Here is tonight’s Postgame Review.
