Flyers captain Claude Giroux knows last season wasn’t a good one for himself or the Flyers and motivation is setting in as the 2017-18 season approaches.
Claude Giroux had seen a noticeable decline in points in recent years, but particularly a drop in goals scored in the last season. In essentially the prime of his career, it feels as if he should be posting many more points. However, the solution to the problem could be simple: just shoot more.
Which of the young defensive core of the Philadelphia Flyers franchise will crack the lineup for the 2017-18 season?
From competing for the top spot in the division, the Flyers took a nosedive after their win streak and crashed down at sixth place in the Metropolitan Division at season’s end, just ahead of Carolina and New Jersey. With a new season just around the corner, it’s time for the Flyers to start clawing their way back among the division’s elite.
It was a very up-and-down season for Travis Konecny, but fairly typical for a guy who is still eligible to play at the junior level but somewhat unexpectedly made the Flyers roster. So with a year under his belt, is Konecny due to break out in his sophomore season?
It was no secret that Flyers captain Claude Giroux had a rough season in 2016-17 with decreased point production. Despite playing in all 82 games last season, Giroux had just 14 goals and 58 points. Giroux attributed last season’s struggles to injury. But if you ask former Flyer and current NBC Sports analyst Jeremy Roenick about Giroux, that’s not the case.
The addition of Nolan Patrick and the departure of Brayden Schenn may define the Flyers offseason, but their most valuable offseason move may be re-signing Jordan Weal.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Flyers have re-signed Mike Vecchione to a two-year deal with a cap hit of $900,000.
With under two days until free agency begins, the Flyers managed to keep one of their players around for a little while longer. Jordan Weal has re-signed with the Flyers on a two-year deal. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
The Flyers aren’t in the market for much in free agency besides a goaltender, and there aren’t many definitive open spots on the roster that could fit a veteran player. That said, two former Flyers are on the market, and their names are coming up in regards to the Flyers.
