Phillies designate Andrew Bailey for assignment

Even with the Phillies staying put at the trade deadline, manager Pete Mackanin hinted at some possible roster moves in the near future. The team started that process, designating reliever Andrew Bailey for assignment.

The Phillies signed Bailey back in December after pitching just 10 games for the Yankees in 2015 and 59 games over the last four seasons due to injury. Through June 3, though, Bailey was pitching well for the Phillies, posting a 2.03 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched. Since then? Not the same results. In 16.2 innings since June 4, Bailey had a 10.26 ERA. His most recent outing, with the Phillies ahead of the Braves, 1-0, on Sunday, Bailey surrendered the go-ahead two-run homer to Jeff Francoeur. His ERA in July was 15.88 (10 ER in 5.2 IP). Bailey finishes his stint with the Phillies this season with a 6.40 ERA.
Taking Bailey's place on the Phils will be Luis Garcia. He's appeared in two games already this season for the Phils, allowing two runs over three innings. His fastball reaches the high 90's, sometimes even 100, and his slider shows plenty of upside which is why the Phillies will give him another look moving forward. This season in Triple-A, he's 6-3 with a 2.58 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .217 average. He hasn't allowed a run over his last eight appearances, spanning eight innings
