Though the Toronto Blue Jays ultimately won the waiver claim, the Philadelphia Phillies put in a waiver claim on recently waived outfielder Jimmy Paredes, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports

As Kubatko noted, the Phillies waiver claim proved to be ineffective because their record is currently 22-16, while the Blue Jays record is 19-20. Waiver claim priorities start with the the team with the worst record, and work their way up to the teams with the best record, so the Blue Jays got a chance to make a claim before the Phillies did.

Had the Phillies won the waiver claim on the 27-year-old, he probably would have replaced Emmanuel Burriss on the the 25-man roster, given that Burris is currently hitting just .107. Paredes, who had concluded a rehab stint with the Baltimore Orioles, can play both in the infield and outfield, and batted .275 with 10 home runs and 42 RBIs in 104 games for the Orioles in 2015.
