When the Philadelphia Phillies traded their 10th-ranked prospect RHP Franklyn Kilome to the New York Mets on July 27 — for what turned out to be 49 games, five home runs and 17 RBI out of 12-year veteran Asdrubal Cabrera — the club had no idea of what was soon to come almost exactly three months later for the 23-year-old.

Kilome, per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo, underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Wednesday and will miss the entire 2019 season. The Dominican Republic native right-hander posted a 4-9 record, 4.18 ERA, 125-61 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.343 WHIP spanning 26 starts and 140 innings this past season with Double-A Reading and Double-A Binghamton.

Kilome is the Mets' second-best pitching prospect and their fifth-best prospect overall, according to MLBPipeline.com rankings. Overall, four of the Mets' top six pitching prospects have now undergone Tommy John surgery over the past two years — LHP Anthony Kay (No. 7-ranked prospect), LHP Thomas Szapucki (No. 9) and RHP Jordan Humphreys (No. 13).

The Mets can never seem to catch a break.
