Phillies Place Vince Velasquez On 60-Day DL, Ending His Season

As with any sport, injuries are just another part of baseball, and it's definitely not a fun aspect either.

Today the Phillies made some moves involving a few of their players going to the DL. One for a shorter period of time, and one for the season.

The Phillies have officially placed pitcher Vince Velasquez on the 60-day DL, effectively ending his season a month prematurely.

Velasquez injured his middle finger in the first inning of a game back on August 10, that landed him on the DL just two days later.

Now, 12 days after the initial injury, Velasquez is expected to miss the rest of the season, as he will have surgery to repair a vascular issue with the right middle finger.

Additionally, the Phillies placed RHP Zach Eflin on the 10-day DL due to a right shoulder strain.

Because of the Velasquez injury, the Phils selected the contract of RHP Yacksiel Rios from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and recalled RHP Nick Pivetta from the IronPigs to be the 26th man on the roster for the Phillies' double-header on Tuesday night.

A lot of injuries are going down, and it always seems like it's the same theme at this point of the season every year.

This marks the second year in a row that Vince Velasquez will not be able to finish out the season healthy, as he heads to the Disabled List for yet another time this season.
